Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa is the Founder and CEO of Teshkeel Media Group, for whom he created THE 99, the first group of comic superheroes born of an Islamic archetype. THE 99 have received positive attention from the world’s media. Recently, Forbes named THE 99 as one of the top 20 trends sweeping the globe and most recently, President Barack Obama praised Dr. Naif and THE 99 as perhaps the most innovative of the thousands of new entrepreneurs viewed by his Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship.

Naif has a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University where he also earned a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology. He holds a Masters in Organizational Psychology from Teacher’s College, Columbia University and an MBA, also from Columbia University. He earned his undergraduate degree from Tufts University, where he triple majored in clinical psychology, English literature and history. Naif received the Eliot-Pearson Award for Excellence in Children's Media from Tufts University, the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations “ Marketplace of Ideas” Award, and the Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Award presented at the 2009 World Economic Forum and has been named as one of WEF's Young Global Leaders for 2011.

 


Anousheh Ansari

Anousheh Ansari

On September 18, 2006, Anousheh Ansari captured headlines around the world as the first female private space explorer travelling to and staying onboard the International Space Station for 10 days. Afterwards, back on Earth as a successful serial entrepreneur, Anousheh returned to her job as Co-founder and Chairman of her latest technology company, Prodea Systems. In her previous endeavor in 2001, Anousheh had served as Co-founder, CEO and Chairman of the board for Telecom Technologies, Inc.

An active proponent of world-changing technologies and social entrepreneurship, in 2004 Anousheh and her family provided the title sponsorship for the Ansari X Prize, a $10 million cash award for the first non-governmental organization to launch a reusable manned spacecraft into space twice within two weeks. Furthermore, Anousheh currently works to enable social entrepreneurs to bring about radical change globally, with organizations such as ASHOKA and the PARSA Community Foundation. She also hopes her tale of determination, hope and success inspires children to dream big and study hard to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.


Katharina Borchert

Katharina Borchert

Katharina Borchert studied law in Hamburg and Lausanne and worked in the Human Rights sector in Namibia and Switzerland before she got caught up in the Web. She served as editor in chief of an early print magazine about the Internet and continued to write for and about the Web after the magazine went down with the rest of the economy.

She joined WAZ NewMedia in 2006 and launched the regional news site DerWesten as editor in chief. In 2008 she was promoted to the management board of the WAZ Media Group where she was responsible for all of the company's online operations. In 2010 Katharina Borchert went on to work as CEO of Germany's leading news site Spiegel Online. She was nominated as Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum as well as Young European Leader in 2011.


David Kirkpatrick

David Kirkpatrick

David Kirkpatrick is an author, journalist, and media entrepreneur. He wrote the definitive history and explanation of Facebook, The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company that is Connecting the World. Kirkpatrick is also founder and CEO of Techonomy Media, which hosts the annual Techonomy conference, focusing on the centrality of technology and innovation for business and all progress. 

The second annual Techonomy took place Nov. 13-15 in Tucson. Participants the past two years have included Marc Benioff, Jim Breyer, Tyler Cowen, Jack Dorsey, Bill Gates, Reid Hoffman, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Neelie Kroes, Sean Parker, Eric Schmidt, and Hamadoun Toure. Techonomy also produces video and textual editorial content focused on technology's integral role in, increasingly, everything.

Kirkpatrick's bestselling book on Facebook has been published in 30 countries and was a finalist for the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year as well as the Gerald Loeb Award.  He was for many years senior editor for Internet and technology at Fortune Magazine where he wrote numerous cover stories and created and hosted Fortune's Brainstorm conference series. Kirkpatrick writes regularly for Vanity Fair and Forbes. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and appears frequently on television, radio, and various Internet media.


Anke Domscheidt-Berg

Anke Domscheidt-Berg

Anke Domscheit-Berg, is founder and director of opengov.me, a consulting business, helping governments to become more open and transparent, as well as of fempower.me, a consulting and training business helping women managers and their organisations to break down barriers for women in leadership positions. Prior to this, she had been working for 15 years as IT consultant and project leader at Accenture and McKinsey's Business Technology Office and as a Director at Microsoft Germany. At McKinsey, she lead the study "A wake up call for female leadership in Europe" and contributed to the study "Women Matter". 

As an early activist for transparency and open government, she initiated the Open Government Barcamp series in Germany and co-founded the Government 2.0 Network Germany. She is a recognised speaker and author on open government, freedom of the internet, community public partnerships, and gender equality. As organizer or jury member she supported Apps for Democracy competitions at State, National and the EU level and helped organize the Random Hacks of Kindness Hackathon in Berlin. Anke Domscheit-Berg serves as Supervisory Board Member of Teachfirst Germany, dedicated to minimize disadvantages for children based on their social background. She is ambassador for the Barefoot College in India, which trains illiteral rural women to become solar engineers. She holds a Masters in European Business Administration (Newcastle, UK) and a BA in International Business Administration as well as a degree in Applied Textile Art. She was awarded Women of the Year 2010 by the State of Berlin. 


Esther Dyson

Esther Dyson is chairman of EDventure Holdings. Her primary activity is investing in and nurturing start-ups, with a recent focus on health care and aerospace. From October 2008 to March 2009 she lived in Star City outside Moscow, Russia, training as a backup cosmonaut. Apart from this brief sabbatical, she is an active board member for a variety of startups, including 23andMe, Airship Ventures, Eventful, Evernote, IBS Group (advisory board), Meetup, NewspaperDirect, Voxiva (the company behind text4baby.org in the US and Russia), WPP Group (not a start-up), XCOR Aerospace and Yandex (recent IPO).  

Her past investments have included Medstory (sold to Microsoft), Flickr and del.icio.us (sold to Yahoo!), Brightmail (sold to Symantec). Her portfolio includes all the companies she serves as a director.Dyson  also sits on the boards of several nonprofits, including  the the Eurasia Foundation, the Sunlight Foundation, the Personal Genome Foundation, the Commercial Spaceflight Federation  and StopBadware.org. She has a BA in economics from Harvard and was founding chairman of ICANN from 1998 to 2000. In addition, she wrote the best-selling, widely translated book "Release 2.0: A design for living in the digital age," published by Broadway Books, in 1997.  


Peter Goldmark

Peter Goldmark

Peter Goldmark is chair of Ashoka's Changemakers. Previously, he directed the Climate and Air program for Environmental Defense from 2003 through 2010. Prior to joining Environmental Defense, he was Chairman and CEO of the International Herald Tribune.  Peter has had exceptional careers in both the public and private sectors.  His public service was highlighted by his tenure as Budget Director for the State of New York during the 1970s city- and state-wide fiscal crisis where he was an architect of its rescue; and as Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey through to 1983. He served as president of the Rockefeller Foundation from 1988 through 1997, encouraging its involvement in environmental issues, particularly as they related to energy.

Mr. Goldmark was also a trustee of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (1982-1988), member of Board Overseers and Chair of Harvard University’s Finance Committee (1984-1990), director of Knight Ridder Inc. (1991-1998), director of the Dreyfus Third Century Mutual Fund (1992-1998), member of the National Commission on Civic Renewal (1997-1998), trustee of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research (2000-2007) and trustee of the Financial Accounting Foundation.  In addition, he serves as a board member of Lend Lease Corporation (1999-present), and member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Goldmark is a recipient of the Wilson Wyatt National Award for Urban Revitalization and a member of the Legion of Honor, France. He has taught courses at the JFK School of Government, Harvard; Yale College; The New School; Brandeis University; and Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University as Visiting Professor of Public and International Affairs. He holds a B.A. from Harvard University, and several honorary degrees.   


Ramin Hashemi

Ramin is a corporate executive with experience in large multi-national, small entrepreneurial, as well turn-around companies. After working at Lockheed Martin on Safety, Reliability, and Quality Assurance of the International Space Station for NASA, Ramin moved to the private sector where he successfully built several businesses. Ramin has received several awards, including Business of the Year award from California State Senator Jim Battin.  

Following completion of a program in Brazil designed by the Geneva based WISE group to learn about key success factors of social entrepreneurs, Ramin has recently turned his career focus on this sector to leverage on his expertise from the private sector to help make a positive social impact. Ramin holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics, a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, and has completed the Program for Executive Development (PED) at IMD.


Lars Hinrichs

Lars Hinrichs

Lars Hinrichs is the founder of HackFwd and a serial entrepreneur and investor. One of his first efforts, politik-digital.de, was an award-winning platform for politics and new media he launched at 22. Following that early success, his next venture, a respected new media consulting firm, went bust -- but not without first paying rich dividends in learning.

Lars applied those learnings to his third major effort, XING, a highly successful business networking platform. As Founder and CEO, Lars oversaw its 2006 IPO, making XING the world’s first Web 2.0 company to go public. He then successfully steered it for two years post IPO. His most recent startup, HackFwd, is an innovative pre-seed investment company that supports Europe’s most passionate geeks in launching the world’s most exciting tech startups.

When he’s not working to promote European tech innovation, Lars can be found advising on the Global Leaders of World Economic Forum, the Young Global Leaders, and helping Germany with their digital strategy as part of the UNICEF council.


Badr Jafar

Badr Jafar

Badr Jafar is President of Crescent Petroleum, headquartered in the United Arab Emirates for over 40 years and with offices worldwide, where he leads project development and financial deal structuring activities for the group. Mr Jafar also serves as CEO of Crescent Investments, the group’s project investments division, and as Chairman of Gas Cities LLC, a joint venture between Crescent Petroleum and Dana Gas PJSC. He is also actively involved in business development in Dana Gas PJSC, the Gulf region’s first and largest listed private sector natural gas company, and serves on its International Advisory Board. Mr Jafar serves as Chairman of Pearl Petroleum, a partnership between Crescent Petroleum, Dana Gas, OMV of Austria and MOL of Hungary. 

Additionally, Mr Jafar has a variety of international and commercial interests, including aviation, serving as a board member of Gama Aviation (UK); shipping, serving as Vice-Chairman of the board for Gulftainer Ltd. (the Middle-East’s largest private container port operator); and real estate, serving as a board member of Enshaa PSC (UAE). He also plays an active role in private equity initiatives, serving as a board member of GrowthGate Capital (Bahrain). He is also the founder of Collo Ltd (UK) and Persicus Inc (USA), which specialize in the manufacturing and marketing of high-end consumer products worldwide, and of Omniway Properties Ltd (UK), which targets European property development. Mr Jafar was recently honoured as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
